The enemy is attacking your nation! Fortunately, you have wizards to do all your battles for you. But the wizards require special runes be matched up, and then they can unleash their magic upon the enemies. A match-3 game - or 5 or 6!
There's really only so far this concept can take you. I like the idea, even if it is a little silly, but it's nice having an objective and a sort of end result you're aiming for.
The main problem I have is in the castle design. The runes you're trying to match up only go so far as the castle walls. Thankfully, the bad guys only attack straight-on, so that's not a concern, but sometimes the designer of the castle only gives the runes one space. That's it. So there's a really good chance that if an enemy approaches that one space, he's going to get to attack, which reduces your life, which ends the level and makes you start all over again.
I realize that there's supposed to be some idea of a challenge, but some of the castle desgins are just too difficult to defend properly. This is a problem I encountered after I was done recording the episodes - those went fairly well, and I liked the map, choosing a level, and fighting off the hordes with our powerful magic. The match-3 runes are easily identified, and the additional time pressure of the attacking horde makes for a slightly less casual game than something like Candy Crusher.
But if a castle is designed to only let one rune line up, then good luck getting the right sort of line up to repel the attackers from that corner. That's a good way to get me to never play the game again.
Likely never going to touch it again, but it's a nice diversion for a little while.
