Plot synopsis

Samus Aran has found herself in a neverending loop: mines, jungle, ice, and underworld. And she can't get out until she finds the treasure at the very bottom of the maze. It's too bad she's being controlled by a player that's bad at video games ...

Impressions

It's Spelunky, just with a different skin. I'm bad at Spelunky, but I like playing every once in a while just because it's a good 2D platformer roguelike. Enemies are tough without being too tough, the randomly generated levels are interesting, and one of these days, I'll eventually get good enough to get to Olmec every time.

So why the Metroid Mod? Mostly because it's also fun. OK, so Samus in her Zero Suit isn't going to be able to do much - but wouldn't it be cool to have a Metroid game that was laid out pretty much like this? I think a roguelike Metroid would sell like hotcakes. Heck, the other Metroid games are being played even today, and I think Spelunky will be played far into the future. It seems like a natural match.

The only real problem is the design of the bats: they're a little too small and out of the way compared to the vanilla graphics, and so they can cause a few too many deaths as they leap out of nowhere to eat your face. But the designs for everything else is spot-on.

Of course, I'm really bad at the game, so we never got to see the changes to the other beasts. Olmec? Yeti? The aliens in the mothership? All mysteries to me currently, though one day (eventually) I'll get to see them.

Final verdict

If you're a Metroid fan, I can't recommend this mod enough. If you've never played Spelunky before, but you like platformers and roguelikes, then there's no reason not to pick up this game.
